Nelson Mechanical Design's 2010 Year End Newsletter
2010 has been a great year at Nelson Mechanical Design, Inc. We have been involved in many great “green” projects, we introduced to our customers some new high efficiency equipment, and we were recently selected as “2010 Contractor of the Year” by the prestigious Contractor Magazine.

Green Projects:

Smart Grid on the Vineyard:
We partnered with GE/Smart Grid and the Vineyard Energy Project to install communications modules on GE Smart Grid appliances in 50 island homes and link them together wirelessly to the home’s network and a data storage device called a Nucleus. These 50 homes will be able to use the GE dashboard on a personal computer to track how much energy each appliance uses. This information will also be sent to Vineyard Power to improve the efficiency of electricity generation and use. We also installed the new GE Heat Pump Water Heater in some of these homes.

Mansion House:
We partnered with Cape Light Compact and their agent RISE Engineering to perform a “green” retrofit of this island hotel. The end result was an annual reduction in their carbon footprint by 62 tons of CO2 and their electricity use by more than 91,000 kWh. This project is featured in a cover story of the Winter 2010 edition of Green Mechanical Contractor magazine. (please visit our website to see the article)

Cape Light Compact Incentives:
Cape Light Compact has residential and commercial energy efficiency rebate programs – qualifying commercial projects are funded up to 80%. NMD has worked with CLC and their agent RISE Engineering on “green” projects at the Mansion House and Tisbury School. These projects save the customer money in both construction and operation costs; for more information, please contact Meg at our office to request a free energy audit from Cape Light Compact.

Green Products:

Air Source Heat Pumps and Geothermal:
Our air source heat pump and geothermal projects are still a top seller, even in today’s construction market. Air source heat pump systems can cut the heating/cooling costs in half and are often times competitive in installation costs with traditional systems. Geothermal systems can reduce operational cost by up to 60 percent. There is a 30% tax credit with no cap for geothermal projects which is makes them affordable.

GE Hybrid Hot Water Heater:
We are now offering the GE Hybrid Hot Water Heater for your home or small business. These hot water heaters use heat pump technology and an electric backup to potentially reduce your hot water heating costs by half.
Fujitsu Heat Pumps: We have been selling Daikin air source heat pumps for years and we now also offer the Fujitsu line as well. The Fujitsu heat pumps are about as efficient, qualify for similar tax credits, and are less expensive than their Daikin counterparts. We still use Daikin air source heat pumps for larger jobs, due to Fujitsu’s limitation in size. Either way, we have a great air source heat pump system for your project.

Daikin Altherma:
Daikin air source heat pumps have been reducing heating and cooling costs for years, but only for our warm air and AC customers. Daikin is now offering an air to water heat pump that they call Altherma. This unit will allow us to connect to your domestic hot water, radiant floor warming, hydro air, or other hot water heating systems. Like its air to air counterpart, Daikin Altherma will save up to 50% on heating and cooling costs vs. traditional systems.
